How Does Sclerotherapy Work?

During sclerotherapy, a specialized solution is carefully injected directly into the targeted vein. The solution irritates the lining of the treated blood vessel, causing it to close and gradually collapse.

Once the vein is closed, blood naturally reroutes through healthier surrounding veins. Over time, the treated vessel is broken down and absorbed by the body, causing the visible vein to gradually fade from view.

Because sclerotherapy does not require surgical incisions, treatment can typically be performed in-office with minimal interruption to your normal routine.

What Areas Can Be Treated?

Sclerotherapy is most commonly performed on the legs and thighs, where spider and varicose veins frequently develop. Depending on the type and size of the veins present, treatment may be appropriate for areas including:

• Thighs
• Calves
• Ankles
• Behind the knees
• Other areas of the legs with visible spider or small varicose veins

Most patients tolerate the procedure well. You may experience temporary stinging or mild discomfort at the injection sites.

The length of your appointment will depend on the number of veins being treated and your personalized treatment plan.

Is There Downtime After Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy generally requires little downtime, and many patients can return to normal daily activities shortly after their appointment. Walking is often encouraged following treatment to promote healthy circulation.

Your provider may recommend compression stockings or other post-treatment measures for a period of time following your procedure.

Temporary redness, bruising, swelling, tenderness, or discoloration can occur around treated veins. These effects typically improve as the area heals.

When Will I See Results?

Sclerotherapy results develop gradually. Smaller spider veins may begin fading within several weeks, while larger treated veins can take longer to improve.

Some veins may require more than one treatment session to achieve the desired improvement. Your provider will develop a treatment plan based on the number, size, and location of the veins being addressed.
